Literacy Volunteers of the Mid-Ohio Valley is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that has served adults in our community for more than twenty years. We’re a team of passionate volunteer tutors who provide free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to native and foreign-born students seeking to improve their basic literacy skills in English.

To foster and promote literacy and life skills among adults who request our assistance in the Mid-Ohio Valley community.
Our Vision
To help promote an adult population in the Mid-Ohio Vally that has the reading, writing, and life skills necessary for their social and economic needs.
Our Goal
To provide free and ongoing tutoring in reading, writing, and life skills in a confidential, one-on-one environment to residents of the Mid-Ohio Valley who request our assistance.
Our Location
We are currently located in the Emerson branch of the Parkersburg and Wood County Public Library, at 3100 Emerson Avenue, Parkersburg, WV 26104.
Our Programs
Our efforts focus on two areas:
Basic Reading Program
Our basic reading program assists adults whose limited reading and writing skills present difficulties in everyday life. The students who come to us all have different stories: some did not profit from their school experiences or did not attend school regularly; others find their literacy skills insufficient for the changing world; still others desire to be able to read to their children or better understand their healthcare needs.
Whatever their goals, our tutors are prepared to meet students where they are with compassion and understanding.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL students want to understand and speak English, but many also have goals related to what they hope to accomplish once they do. Many ESL students are highly educated in their native language, while others have no formal education in any language. They are learning English and basic skills at the same time. Often, ESL tutors aren’t fluent in their students’ native languages. Instead, they work together in an immersive environment proven to be the fastest way to learn a new language.
